The Adult Learners’ Week (ALW) is a global learning festival that, first launched and celebrated in the UK in 1992, highlights the achievements of adult learners through mobilization, experience sharing, and sensitization of learners’ roles for sustainable human and social development. The event also defines the central functions of different key players, notably adult learners, civil society, governments, and development partners, in promoting all aspects of adult learning and education. In November 1999, the UNESCO General Conference adopted a resolution to launch International Adult Learners’ Week officially, embracing International Literacy Day as a pivotal day and recognizing the amplified notion of lifelong learning.

Since 1998, KALA has continued to bring adult learners together during Adult Learners’ Week, leading to an increase in learners enrolling in adult literacy centres. KALA collaborates with partners in planning and implementing the Adult Learners’ Week in Kenya.
